If you’re looking to increase your living space and add recreational or themed rooms, the answer might be right under your feet.  Finishing or remodeling your basement is an effective way to increase square footage and the value of your home.  Not to mention, it provides extra space to stretch out, work out, watch movies, tinker around, or do whatever you like!

Popular basement trends include: home theaters, gym/spas, bar/entertaining spaces, game rooms, additional bedrooms and bathrooms, workspaces and craft rooms and the current favorite: open concept living space.  This week I’m going to talk about home theaters and game rooms.

Home Theaters

While many of us already have large flat screened televisions in our family rooms. if you love to watch movies or TV, a home theater is a great option.  Theaters offer many possibilities from built-in surround sound systems, to risers to raise theater seats on, to darkened walls, these options make you feel as if you’re in your own private viewing theater.  Theaters became a trend about 20 years ago, but haven’t lost appeal.

Game Rooms

Pool tables, dart boards, foosball tables, poker tables, etc., – if you like to play games, a game room is a solid choice.  Game rooms can also be custom wired for multiple player video gaming as well.  Many times game rooms are accompanied by a bar or small kitchen area for entertaining.  This offers a wide array of choices and are great for entertaining.

I’ve worked on many basements, more than I can count, over the years and my favorite request was when a client asked for her basement to be turned into a ballroom.  She and her husband had been ballroom dancers and loved this hobby so much they wanted to be able to practice in their own home.  I really enjoyed watching their faces when I showed them the final product.

You can do a lot with a basement remodel.  Whether it’s a music room, craft room, man cave or she shack, I love working with clients to make their basement dreams come true.
